As a painter and drawer, my work deeply engages with the rich narratives of the Black community, particularly through the lens of folk art. In the past decade, I have witnessed a cultural reset that has reshaped our collective identity, and I strive to reflect this transformation in my art. Using a diverse array of mediums—including oil, acrylic, watercolor, and charcoal—I explore how our stories, experiences, and histories intersect.
My artistic journey has taken me from my hometown to distant places, but it is the community I grew up in that has ultimately become my muse. Each painting begins with a personal connection: I gather photographs that capture moments, places, and people within my surroundings. These images serve as the building blocks for my compositions, which I meticulously arrange on canvas to create a cohesive narrative. By altering elements—such as signage and interpersonal interactions—I guide the viewer’s gaze and invite them to explore the vibrant tapestry of our community's experiences.
My work aims to encapsulate the essence of Black culture and its evolution, revealing the beauty and complexity of our shared history. By blending realism with abstraction, I create scenes that reflect not only individual memories but also collective stories. I want my audience to contemplate the dynamic relationships within our community and how they have shifted over time.
